I'm performing at this years TC again with the GF. I just finished up the backing track I will be performing live percussion on top off. I'll post the "with perc mix" once it's tracked. These festivals always crack me up. After they see us perform people are never sure what to think. Smile
I've been getting up early this week to pound this out. I like how it's coming.

  • By hearing this I understand what every thing I work on lacks... This track has depth that I cannot comprehend... I am so stuck on trying to create a song that has a simple chorus and verse. Question... should I work on perfecting chorus and verse before moving into something like this? Or is what I am talking about a different art than what this track is? I know so little about music but love what it is!
    • I'm glade you enjoyed this.
I wouldn't stop trying to create traditional song structure. I couldn't write a pop tune if my life depended on it. It's something i should work on myself.
I am a product of non conformity. My influences tend to be eclectic & abstract. cevin Key & Josh silver i would say are my biggest "production" influences. But i have MANY other drummer & musical influences. I have evolved as a techy drummer without a band.
If i had to pick a formula for my music i would have to say.

      Learn your fundamentals before experimenting!
      This is in everything.
Drum/Perc is my 1st love and have trained for years to get a strong foundation.
Learn how everything you use works. This improves mixing dramatically. I have a visual mental signal flow of everything during a mix.
Feed off your daily life to drive your art. Well this is my reason for creating. It's my release from the mundane.
I have also cut myself off of most mass media. Thats just my personal choice. I would rather work on this then have cable as a distraction. At least music & the net/forums are something that i can gain from & contribute to. I like to think i'm controlling my soical impressions. I don't wont it to be the other way around. I see so much of this world as non questioning.
This is how i work. Yeah i'm odd. =)
      • Can you explain "Learn your fundamentals before experimenting" ?
Can I learn music fundamentals without playing a REAL instrument… could you recommend a book on music theory or something?
I love your other advice… I also have cut myself off of most mass media… but I am a NPR junky (that’s national public radio)

Well here is a song I did from scratch… all the loops I made myself … and some samples from “Total Recall”
        www.garageband.com/artist/SaltyDave
Maybe you could give me some constructive advice?
        • "Learn your fundamentals before experimenting"
What i meant by that is don't lets say do a "Afro Cuban" , "Dub" , "Thrash Metal", ect. Track without studying up & understanding the fundamentals & roots of the style.
This is not only a problem in music but pretty much all art forms.
My GF has enlightened me about the plague of this in the dance world as well. So many new dancers are taking classes from unqualified teachers & in turn teaching classes themselves just weeks later. The amount of crap coming out of it is scary.
It's like if i said the track i just completed is middle eastern industrial fusion. That might be the case. But i am by far not qualified to teach anyone any middle eastern fundamentals. Being that i am a student of this myself. But the other aspects i could validly explain do my strong understanding of them. (electronic production, drum kit/trigger technique, ect)
I don't want to wonder off topic. But this is why i don't put out "middle eastern", "Indian", hell even "detroit house" because i don't feel i have put in the time/work with understanding enough of the fundamentals beforehand.

Understanding then creation is my opinion.
          • That is a really good point… You find the same thing in martial arts… Somebody starts teaching a style who is just not qualified and teaches bad technique. With Music and Dance it doesn’t bother me as much… I dance at clubs sometimes but I would not say I know how to break dance… anyway I hope all the artists out there keep posted there music because it is inspiring!
  • Thanks for the positive comments. And rick what vocal sample i don't hear any samples ;)
    • Good post above. Having been through some theory instruction, it is very true that you must know the rules if you really want to break them. It took us first year theory heads quite some time to wrap our heads around that concept. But, once you move on from that really boring introduction stuff, you thank the stars for the review. Fundamentals are not exciting and in no way emphasize "fun", but they are totally worth the while.
      • Oh, Dave, BTW I created a tribe just for you (and many others like us) that like to learn about music in this modern age. There are some great links in the header on the page that will help get you started on theory in general. Also check out the offerings at your local city college if available. If they have a music program they will have a fundamentals of music class. They start at the very basics, so aren't too exciting...but they will certainly help. Also look into a sound recording/electronic music production course. They are fewer and further between than fundamentals of music, but they are out there.

Here's that tribe link. Come on in and start something (open to anyone interested)
