Production equipment and DAWs?

Hello, I have been producing psytrance for about a year and a half now, and I am trying to save for a mac so I can use Logic pro... Is it really worth spending 2k or more on a mac/logic or pro tools set up? I'm currently using Ableton Live and some vst instruments, but I'm not really connecting with my current set up very well.

I heard Logic is kinda of like a super good and complex version of Reason. You do not use vsts, just the synths and patches that it comes with...

I'm really into programming my own sounds but im having a hard time finding a VSTi synth that can program in comfortably.

I like the idea of not using VSTs anymore, because i can never settle on what i want to use, so many VSTs everywhere, will make my brain explode...

So is Logic the answer? I'm super sick of pcs and ableton live, and im not a huge fan of cubase or reason.

I have wrestled with this question for a while myself. Personally, I don't like most DAWs because they seem to take more energy away from the creative flow than contribute to it. For example, Protools has a steep learning curve that takes time to do anything beyond simple recording.

I think it depends on if you are comfortable with being restricted in the software that you use with Reason. (although it has a lot to give) Logic Pro has more to offer and is well loved by Mac users. Garageband is pretty easy to use too and is flexible (and cheap). You can buy Protools and an interface for about $400.

On the PC it gets a little muddier. Abelton, Acid, Cubase, Protools HD, Fruity Loops are all popular. I suggest demoing them all to see if you like one. Before you buy.

I love using Acid for making loops on PC but hate it for recording and midi. On the Mac I use Protools.

Thanks for the reply, what is protools like exactly? does it come with it's own synths that are nice and shiny, or is it another VST dependent DAW? I don't have a mac yet so it is impossible to try logic before i buy, but it is definitely the direction that i am leaning. I use a lot of analog instruments in my music. Like guitars and whatever i can get my hands on. I'm basically just looking for one or two good synths that i can get super comfortable with. Thanks.
