-I hear it may be a good idea to try and get your mixdown sounding so good that you don't need any mastering done. Is it a good idea to eq your entire mixdown? or do you really want to just eq the individual sounds? Cause it seems no matter what I do I can't get my mixdown to sound as warm as some of my favorite tracks. I don't understand how they get the mids and everything so warm and clear and upfront but have it be so clear with the highs at the same time? do they turn down the high hats and higher frequency sounds and boost the bass/lower mids/and upper highs on the eq of the entire mixdown maybe?

Re: mixdown stage
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 6:52 AMI do agree with making it sound so good that you don't need mastering... then getting it mastered!
I personally try to avoid adding eq or compression to the final mix. I stick with making each track sound as good as possible.
warmth is not just a result of eq and compression. my last tracks I had professionally mastered were run through a cranesong hedd 192... which uses analog circuitry to add subtle harmonics to the mix... and this made my all digital tracks sound just lovely!

Re: mixdown stage
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 12:41 PMFor some reason my mixdowns are usually lacking a bit of mid-range punch...
As a result, during mastering I pretty much always run them through the manley massive passive emulation on my Liquid Mix and boost 560k by 3 or 4 on the knob (not sure if it's db or not, liquid mix emulates the knobs of the original exactly)... sounds like a lot, but it helps out my balance.
I'll then do "touch-up" EQ on Ozone... cutting highs above 18000... tiny boost to 90-110hz range, and tiny cut to 250-300 range to kill muddiness. These however, don't change the sound immensely... usually just pump up a bit and make the tune bigger sounding.
Mainly on mixdown you are worried about balance.... is there proper bass... are the highs bright and airy, but comfortable to listen to... are the mids not drowned out... are there any sounds too loud or too quiet in the mix... is the main focus of the track focused properly... that kind of stuff -

Re: mixdown stage
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 11:10 PMThat helps Jan, thanks
I found that my mids are usually lacking as well when comparing them on a visual spectrum to my favorite tracks. Is it wise to look at a visual spectrum of your overall mix and use that to make sure it will sound good on all systems compared to other tracks??? -

Fri, July 25, 2008 - 11:37 PMsure.. but don't rely on it... your ears are more trusty than your eyes when it comes to sound...
